Architectural Achievement Boathouse
Coggeshall Boathouse / San Diego Rowing Club
San Diego, California, United States
The Garty Family Rowing Pavilion addition to the San Diego Rowing Club won the 2006 Orchid award for Architecture. The addition brings to mind the tranquil beauty of rowing and the tradition of craftsmanship associated with the sport. The use of wood and the design references to boats cleverly link the building to the sport it celebrates. The jury praised its references to the craft of boat-building. "This building was inspired by the two things that are so special in San Diego: light and water," Architect R. Hanna said - the makings of an elixir that works.
